How does the Start/stop Automatic work?

The Piaggio Medley 150 is the first scooter equipped with the new iGet engine, featuring an automatic start/stop functionality. But how does it work and what is so groundbraking on this engine compared to other engines with the same functionality?

1. - No separate Starter Motor anymore
Medley 150 alternator

Medley 150 alternator

There is no conventional starter motor or starter mechanism like on other brands (or on cars for that). When the start button is pressed or start/stop is activated, battery current is inverted and supplied back to the alternator, starting the engine via direct drive on the crankshaft. This means when the scooter is in the start/stop mode, twisting the throttle will straight away rotate the crankshaft and the scooter starts rolling while an engine rotation alter the engine is up and running. There is no delay where a starter motor needs to bring the engine to live before the scooter can take off.

Similar each time the engine comes to a halt, the alternator counter rotates the engine automatically back to its best starting position, so the next engine start has minimal resistance. A decompressor is also used to assist starting as the engine has a very high compression ratio at 12.5:1.

2. - Seamless Smart Operation start/stop

Start/stop Auto/Off switch

With a switch on the handlebar, the start/stop can be set to automatic or it can be switched off entirely. In the "Auto" position, the engine cuts off after 3 seconds at 0 km/h. If the engine temperature is cold (< 35 degrees Celsius), it switches off after 7 seconds. Once switched off but automatic start/stop engaged, a green indicator light (marked with "A" on the dashboard flashes one time per second.

In riding conditions when automatic start/stop is used a lot (stop & go traffic), the battery charge can fall below a certain level and the start/stop functionality switches off to protect remaining battery charge. Then the engine keeps running and the green "A" light on the dashboard flashes 2 x per second.
